Over 1,000 turn out for protest rally

Over 1,000 people turned out for the Mega Rally at Barn Elms Sports Fields on Saturday April 27, protesting against the plans to build a third runway at Heathrow.

The rally, organised by Richmond MP Zac Goldsmith, was addressed by 21 MPs, MEPs and councillors from Richmond, Hounslow, Ealing and Putney. The leading address was made by London Mayor Boris Johnson.

The good-natured crowd was rallied by local Barnes TV personality and former Tory MP Gyles Brandreth. Several protesters turned up in costume, and one, clad in a rather sinister white rabbit suit, looks set to be immortalised in photos next to Boris Johnson in a future edition of 'Have I Got News For You.'

At the end of the rally visitors were entreatied to vote in the Richmond Council referendum and sign a giant petition.
