Barnes Literary Society - Sarah Wallis and Svetlana Palmer - In Their Own Words - Private Letters and Diaries from the Two World Wars
Sarah and Svetlana have collaborated in three fascinating books about the lives of young people caught up in the two World Wars. Intimate Voices from the First World War tells the story of the First World War entirely through the diaries and letters of its combatants, eyewitnesses and victims. Words – A War in Words relates the story of the First World War through powerful individual stories written on the battlefield and on leave, under occupation and under siege. Their third book We Were Young and At War follows the stories of sixteen teenage boys and girls from several countries who write with a disarming directness about their reactions to and experiences of a very adult war. Through letters and diaries of participants their books have given an original insight into the lives of young people shattered by war.
