Part of the Barnes Music Festival.
Christabel Gairdner is an accomplished local pianist who gave recitals in Ely Cathedral over a number of years and continues to play regularly in France and Barnes. She returns to the Barnes Music Festival to give a lunchtime recital featuring pieces not only by Elgar but also by Haydn, Bridge, Liszt and Beethoven.
In a Festival which celebrates landmark English composers, Christabel includes in her recital one of Elgar’s most heart-rending short pieces, Salut d’amour (Love’s greeting) and a composition by Frank Bridge (a strong influence on Benjamin Britten). Her programme will also include a late ‘London’ sonata by Haydn, composed during one of his visits to England, Sposalizio by Liszt and Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight’ Sonata, the Adagio sostenuto of which is arguably the most famous single movement he ever wrote.
