Organ Recital – Simon Johnson

Part of the Barnes Music Festival.

Simon Johnson is the Organist and Assistant Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral. Simon’s work as a soloist, accompanist and choir director make him one of the most versatile church musicians working today. At St Paul’s he plays for all the important national events which have included the funeral of Baroness Thatcher and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee service. He is much in demand as a recitalist, having toured extensively in Europe and the United States, and has worked with many of the major London orchestras.

As well as masterpieces by Purcell, JS Bach and William Byrd, he will be performing Jonathan Harvey’s Toccata for Organ and Pre-Recorded Tape, This challenging work demands technical mastery and dexterity from the organist and a profound sense of rhythm to match the pre-recorded sounds that evoke an otherworldly, ethereal and almost primal soundscape.

The organ at St Mary’s Barnes is a fine two manual and pedal mechanical organ by Peter Collins built in 1984 to a neo-baroque style. The touch is renowned and ideal for the works of Bach and the early English composers in addition to much contemporary music.
